Johnson & Johnson Artificial Hip Recalled
An artificial hip implant, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson unit DePuy Orthopaedics, has recently been recalled and taken off the market. The artificial hip was made and marketed to last 15 years or more, but massive amounts of people worldwide have reported failure after just a few years. The implant, known as Articular Surface Replacement (A.S.R.), caused many patients intense pain and injury. After the reported pain, surgeons found that in many patients there was a mass of dead tissue near the sight of the implant, near the thighs. In recent history, a number of other Johnson & Johnson products have been found to be faulty and have been recalled, ranging from baby lotion to Motrin.
Unlike drugs and pharmaceuticals that have to be tested and approved by the FDA, implants can be sold without going through the same kind of testing and scrutiny. DePuy had a similar product that had already been approved. When they made changes to it and labeled the new implant A.S.R., the results were overwhelmingly negative. Those who experienced pain with the A.S.R. had to undergo more operations to replace the device with another artificial hip. While some surgeries were successful, other patients suffered permanent damage to the bone, muscles, and nerves.
