Arkansas Nuclear Plant Accident Kills One

Eight workers were injured and one was killed this past weekend when there was a tragic accident at Arkansas One nuclear plant. The event occurred when the employees were moving equipment from the nuclear side of the facility to the non-nuclear side. Reports say that crewmembers were moving an old generator stator away from the turbine building. This was during a planned refueling and maintenance outage that occurred at Unit 1.

At about 7:45 a.m. in the morning on Easter Sunday, the crewmembers began their job moving the generator stator. During the project, the large generator toppled over, crushing one worker and injuring another five to eight workers. Arkansas One claims that this was an unusual even classification of accident, which is considered the lowest classification for accidents at nuclear plants. The accident was not related to the side of the plant that the reactor was on, and reports show that there is not any radiation associated with the accident that could harm home dwellers nearby.

Arkansas One says that they do not have any information to provide at present regarding the parties involved. The company says that their second 995-megawatt reactor shut down automatically after the incident occurred and both reactors are in stable condition. The unfortunate victim who died at the plan was a 25-year-old who was a resident of Russelville and a hardworking employee at Arkansas Nuclear One.

According to RT, eight other people suffered nonfatal injuries when the generator fell and were rushed to local hospitals. Russelville residents say that they are often concerned that the plant will experience an explosion and that the radiation could harm local residents. Thankfully, this accident did not put any Arkansas residents at risk.

Arkansas Nuclear One has the duty to provide electricity to 2.8 million Americans who live in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and the home state. The plant has about 15,000 employees and operates using about 30,000 of generating capacity.
