Why Do Crane Accidents Happen?
Crane accidents are most common in the construction and manufacturing industries. About 2 in 3 crane accident fatalities involve these sectors. Crane accidents often happen when employers fail to hire safe workers, don’t train their employees properly, or fail to make sure they’re hiring qualified individuals to operate cranes.
Crane accidents are often triggered by:
- Improper usage of the crane
- Improper crane for the job
- Adverse weather conditions
- Improper set-up
- Falling debris
- Hazardous conditions surrounding the crane
- Neglected safety procedures
At Arnold & Itkin LLP, our teams knows that crane accidents are preventable, and we put in the work required to determine what happened. Whether a crane wasn’t prepared for an oncoming storm or wasn’t safely secured to its worksite, our team is always focused on cutting through excuses and holding negligent parties accountable for unfairly changing or claiming lives.
The I-10 Beaumont Crane Collapse
On April 22, 2021, two men were driving westbound on I-10 when a crane collapsed, crushed their vehicle, and killed them. The crane was being operated during a project to widen the highway. According to the Department of Public Safety, the crane was in use when it “malfunctioned” and fell apart.
Johnson Brothers Corporation was the contractor in charge of the crane when it collapsed. The company made headlines in 2017 when a crane it operated fell over during a construction project in Daytona Beach. The incident sent a 119-foot piling crashing to the ground.
While the Daytona Beach crane accident didn’t result in injuries, it reminds us today that the company has a history of accidents. While it was fortunate that no one died in that 2017 accident, Johnson Brothers seems to have failed to learn a lesson that would have saved to lives during the Beaumont I-10 crane collapse.
