2018 Grain Elevator Explosion in South Sioux City, Nebraska
In May 2018, tragedy struck South Sioux City, Nebraska. On a Tuesday afternoon, a series of explosions ripped through a privately-owned grain mill, setting off a fire that tore through the building—threatening the structure and causing nearby homes to be evacuated. At the time of the grain elevator explosion, there were three employees on site. It was reported that one of the workers suffered serious burn injuries during the explosion. They were taken to a hospital and then transferred to a burn unit in Lincoln, Nebraska. While fire crews arrived quickly to battle the flames, their efforts were stopped while the gas department tore through the street, looking for lines to shut off gas near the plant. Chief Ed Mahon commented that he had been advised by the city, and potentially the county, that the incident would be declared a state of emergency.
