On Saturday afternoon, around 12:30 PM, a tour bus with over 50 passengers had a rollover accident in New York that hospitalized nearly everyone onboard. The tour bus, owned by JTR Transportation, was traveling from Poughkeepsie to Niagara Falls when it ran off the New York State Thruway 25 miles west of Syracuse and rolled over, landing on its side.
In total, 57 people—including the driver—were hospitalized for injuries of varying severity. Auburn Community Hospital received 27 (the bulk of the patients) to assess their condition, but 3 were transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. Upstate is the leading trauma center in the region, specializing in serious injuries. Upstate received 25 patients total. The remaining passengers were sent to Crouse Hospital.
New York Bus Rollover Devastates Community Members
The tour bus was carrying Poughkeepsie residents in a trip organized by a local community figure, Ximena Urrego. She organizes trips like this to allow residents to visit places they normally wouldn’t be able to afford to see. Her son told NPR that she’s currently getting treatment for glass in her eye and is in need of back surgery.
“It’s a miracle,” Ximena’s son said, who had another relative survive a serious bus crash. “This time around, it hits me twice as hard to know that it happened to both of them already, and both of them made it.”
Regardless, this trip was meant to be a celebration and an opportunity for people in the community who have fewer resources. It’s even more tragic that this accident happened to the people who could afford it the least.
The Impact of a Rollover Accident
As bus accident lawyers, we are familiar with both the common causes and effects of bus rollover crashes. Because buses tend to be top-heavy, they’re more prone to sideways forces that can tip them over. Bus drivers have to account for this with lower speeds on turns and inclines.
The injuries that result from bus rollover accidents include:
These injuries don’t just cause physical pain or loss of function. They’re also costly to treat, putting families under incredible financial strain. The people injured in the rollover crash in New York are already vulnerable; this collision could be disastrous for dozens of families, both in terms of physical health and long-term financial stability.
