While it’s true that oil and natural gas extraction, processing, and transportation are hazardous fields, this does not excuse accidents that leave workers injured, disabled, or lost forever. The above example is just one instance of an accident that changed a worker’s life. When these accidents are caused by negligence or wrongdoing, at-fault parties must be held accountable.

Causes of Plant, Oilfield & Refinery Accidents
Oil extraction injuries, well blowouts, and injuries at plants and refineries may happen when companies cut corners and place more importance on profits and production than the safety of their workers and the environment. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other organizations try to regulate the oil and gas industry, but their resources and personnel are limited. Unsafe working conditions and environmental violations may go unnoticed until it’s too late.
The following are examples of negligence that can lead to oil and gas accidents:
- Aging and outdated equipment
- Rushed plant turnarounds
- Delayed maintenance
- Inadequate inspections
- Equipment malfunction
- Inadequate worker training
- Ignoring safety standards
- Improper safety equipment
