Motorcycles: Good for the Environment and a Danger for People?

As with any good thing, there comes a down side; and this is the unfortunate story for motorcycles around the world. In today’s society, motorcycles are steadily growing in their popularity not just because they make great collectors’ items, but also because of their fuel efficiency in this harder economic period in the United States. People rely on their bikes to get them from A to B on a daily basis, knowing that their fuel bill is a fraction of the price that beautiful Mercedes driving next to them has to pay. Not only is this mode of transportation fuel efficient for the pocket book, it is also believed to not be as bad for the environment, because it is just transporting one person as opposed to one person driving a car all day that can carry up to 7 people.

Whatever a person’s choice for choosing to drive a motorcycle is, the more important fact we must understand is that with more motorcycles on the road, the more accidents are occurring. The downside of a motorcycle is the fact that there is really nothing protecting the driver’s body from the road, apart from maybe a nice leather jacket. When a driver is involved in an accident with another car, the damages can be much more severe and death is even more likely. Specifically, those in motorcycle accidents are known to suffer from head trauma, back and spinal cord injuries, even paralysis or death.

Studies by the CDC show that between the years of 1999 and 2008 that there were an estimated 34,000 motorcycle deaths and over a million reported injuries that were treated with emergency response. These accidents can happen for a variety of reasons, whether it is a drunk driver on the road, or a person running a speed light; those on a motorcycle are more susceptible to receiving fatal injuries when involve in an accident. Regardless of a drives choice to use a motorcycle, no one deserves to be injured in an accident that was caused by another person.

The irresponsibility and negligence of other drivers on the road is sadly something that no driver can avoid. Whether in a full sized vehicle or on a bike, if a drunk driver comes flying through your intersection, an accident will happen, and every individual deserves the right to fight for justice and financial compensation.
