A runaway trailer pulling crushed cars hit a minivan carrying two families in Truxton, New York on May 29. Four young children and three adults in their early 20s were killed in the incident. Another man was injured as well.
The accident took place on Route 13, about 25 miles south of Syracuse, at approximately 6 p.m. The minivan carrying the victims was hit by a trailer that broke away from a truck also travelling the route. Officials said the trailer became disconnected from its rig and slammed into the van, ripping it to pieces. Both vehicles ended up on the side of the road.
The injured man was hospitalized, but information on his condition wasn't available. The two people in the big rig were not injured in the incident, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation, although bad weather may have played a part in the crash.
When 18 wheelers share the road with smaller family vehicles, any accidents that occur are likely to result in serious injuries or fatalities for those travelling in the passenger cars. We urge truck drivers and trucking companies to take better precautions when maintaining and driving their vehicles in order to prevent more tragedies such as this one.
