In New Orleans yesterday, a tug boat pushing an oil barge collided with a gas pipeline causing a large fire to ignite. Reports claim that this specific pipeline was owned by Chevron and it contained a liquefied petroleum gas within. In response to the incident, Chevron isolated the fire and claims that the remaining gas within the pipeline was safe to burn itself out. The pipeline is reported to have spent hours burning after the tugboat crash, and though the pipeline was severely affected by the collision, the barge is said to not have suffered from any damage nor is it spilling oil.
Unfortunately as a result of this incident, the Coast Guard Commander Russ Bowen claims they have noticed traces of oil sheen spread over a mile wide area surrounding the site, Bayou Perot. This location is just 30 miles off of the New Orleans coast, and due to the area being very minimally populated there was no need for evacuations to be made after the fire. This incident did not come without a price, however. Reports claim that there were four victims aboard the tugboat who were injured as a result of the collision last night, and one of them is said to be suffering severely while the other three are minor injuries.
