Detectives Sue Bell Helicopter Over Splash-Landing

In 2010, six New York Police Department detectives were involved in a splash landing when their malfunctioning helicopter spiraled into Jamaica Bay. Now, almost three years later, the detectives are suing Bell Helicopter Textron for the accident. They are also suing Pratt & Whitney, the engine maker that allegedly contributed to the helicopter accident. According to the detectives, a key component was defective and caused the dangerous accident.

The NTSB Contributed Research to the Case

The NYPD claims are allegedly supported by the National Transportation Safety Board and the article says that it was determined that the helicopter's engine failure was the result of drive gear fracturing. This resulted in a defect when the helicopter was manufactured, making it unsafe to drive from an early time. The National Transportation Safety Board says that the detectives all suffered minor injuries in the splash landing and the lawsuit is now seeking monetary damages for the serious physical and emotional injuries that they suffered.
