Westar Plant Accident Kills 2 Workers & Leaves Community Shaken

This past Sunday morning, a plant accident at Jeffrey Energy Center in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, led to the death of two operations supervisors. Westar Energy reported their deaths were caused by a "piece of equipment with high-pressure steam" that was near the two men when the accident occurred. The plant has been shut down while investigators do their jobs.

The two men were initially brought to the University of Kansas for burn treatment, but they later succumbed to their injuries. Their burn injuries were reportedly severe, according to the company. "All of us who worked with [these men] are grieving and thinking of their families as we cope with this loss," said senior vice president of generation John Bridson. Westar's media relations director Gina Penzig added "It is really important every day that we take care of one another, we watch ourselves and our behavior so that we're safe, and that we all go home safe to our families each night. So to know that two of ours didn't, it is difficult news."

About Jeffrey Energy Center

The place where this plant accident took place is a plant that provides electricity to the region—it's the utility's largest plant. In a list of the 50 dirtiest power plants in the United States, Jeffrey Energy Center ranked 12th in 2013. However, OSHA had no data on the power plant—this may be their first serious accident since the 1992 merger that created Western Resources (later Westar).

Our Kansas plant accident lawyers hope that the investigation yields clear answers for the county's grieving families and shaken co-workers. Our hearts go out to those who have lost their loved ones and friends in this explosion.
