It has been reported that between 15 and 20 individuals were injured on Saturday morning when a gas explosion ripped through a Plantation, Florida shopping center around 11:30 a.m. The shopping mall is located in Broward County, north of Miami. Initially, the Plantation Fire Department believed that a gas explosion caused the blast; however, they later stated that the cause is not yet confirmed. Still, an official said that there were ruptured gas lines and an active gas leak when they arrived.
Footage from the scene of the accident shows that the windows were blown out of an LA Fitness and that large pieces of debris had been thrown more than a hundred yards across the street. Other parts of the complex also suffered severe damage, including shattered windows and scattered wreckage.
Firefighters are searching for the injured but believe all have been taken to hospitals. “We’re still searching the collapse area for any leftover victims, but at this point, we believe we’ve accounted for everyone,” said fire Battalion Chief Joel Gordon. Of those injured, two have been reported to have sustained severe injuries.
All businesses in the area have been shut down until fire crews can deem it safe to return. In a tweet, the Plantation police asked individuals to stay away from the area.
