LyondellBasell Chemical Plant Accident: Investigation Underway

According to local news, crews are investigating an accident that claimed two lives at the LyondellBasell chemical plant in La Porte, Texas.

The incident, which appears to be a chemical leak, occurred just after 7:30 pm on Tuesday, July 27 at 1515 Miller Cut-Off Road, where the facility is located, according to a message posted to Community Awareness Emergency Response (CAER). At this time, it is not expected that the leak will impact local residents and businesses. The message also indicated that emergency vehicles may be present in the area, and the Atascocita Fire Department stated that it had sent first responders.

The accident was referred to as a “chemical release” by the Atascocita Fire Department, in a tweet that was posted around 9 pm on Tuesday.

Harris County Pollution Control is currently at the scene, monitoring the air quality. They reported that the leak is isolated, and, thus far, has had not had an offsite impact.
