Drug & Alcohol Impairment

Federal regulations impose a zero-tolerance standard for alcohol and controlled substances among commercial drivers, enforced through pre-employment screening, random testing, post-crash testing, and the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. Despite this framework, impaired driving persists. Over 153,000 drivers have been flagged in the Clearinghouse since 2020, and gaps in testing protocols, prescription medication oversight, and return-to-duty processes continue to put impaired drivers on the road.
