$30 Million for Victims of the Williams Olefins Explosion in Geismar
On June 13, 2013, Williams Olefins’ plant in Geismar, LA, exploded, killing 2 workers and injuring 167 more. After the fire was extinguished and the investigation could begin, workers came to Arnold & Itkin for help with their recovery. They knew the company was keeping something from them, and they knew it was going to be a fight. The explosion was caused by a reboiler with a dangerous flaw in its valve design: when the input valve was opened but the output valve was closed, the reboiler tank had no access to its safety release valve. A simple mistake would immediately turn an enormous tank into a pressurized bomb. That’s precisely what happened in June 2013. We started building a case immediately, because in many of these situations, companies know about the risks they expose their workers to well in advance.
What we found was even worse than we expected.
We learned Williams Olefins knew the risk that valve design posed. They had been warned about it years before the plant exploded and had multiple opportunities to fix it. The fix would have cost a few dollars and taken a few minutes. Instead of acting on what their own experts told them, Williams Olefins let the hazard remain because addressing it might have slowed production. Despite all of this, the company refused to take their workers’ claims seriously. Williams allowed the cases to go before a jury and attempted to limit liability to a subsidiary through a “shell game” with corporate responsibility. The jury saw through it, assigning 98% of the blame to Williams and its parent company.
In our first trial, we secured $15.45 million for a group of 4 workers. Williams Olefins believed it was a fluke, but only a few weeks later, we won a second verdict for another 4 workers, this time for $18.5 million. The company was forced to acknowledge their workers’ claims and the cause of the explosion at last.
The Science Behind Chemical Explosions
For a chemical explosion to occur, the materials involved must be capable of generating a large amount of gas very quickly. Often, the chemical acts as an explosive fuel when it contacts oxygen. When poor maintenance leads to gas leaks, those gases can contact a heat source, expand rapidly, and detonate. If a chemical escapes into a hazardous area, it may react with an ignition source and trigger a serious accident. Plant owners who use impure or dirty chemicals compound this risk, as contaminated materials produce larger volumes of dangerous gas.

Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosions
Boiling liquid expanding vapor explosions, or BLEVEs, are among the most dangerous events that can occur at a plant or refinery. A BLEVE happens when a liquid stored in a sealed container begins to boil. As the liquid heats and converts to gas, it expands and builds pressure inside the container. If the pressure exceeds what the container can hold, it fails catastrophically.
The boiling point of any liquid is pressure-dependent. A liquid stored above its normal-pressure boiling temperature is already in a precarious state; if internal pressure spikes high enough, the liquid can flash to vapor instantaneously, causing a BLEVE. Non-flammable substances are not immune; the physics of pressure buildup apply regardless of whether the contents are combustible.
What Causes a BLEVE?
BLEVEs are most commonly triggered by an external heat source such as a nearby fire. When a pressurized container is exposed to that heat, the substance inside expands beyond the container’s capacity. Even tanks engineered to withstand significant pressure have limits, and once those limits are exceeded, failure is rapid and violent.

Types of Burn Injuries

Aging Plant Equipment Claims for Explosions & Fires
One of the most persistent causes of plant explosions is aging equipment. Most plants and refineries haven’t been renovated since the 1920s or 1930s. Better materials exist, but installing them would require halting production, and that halt would cost money. So plant owners and managers keep production running, slowly placing enormous stress on equipment that was never designed for today’s output demands. Old processes that have since been proven hazardous often remain in use for the same reason.

The Consequences of Ignoring Aging Equipment
The Texas City refinery explosion that killed 15 workers and injured 180 in March 2005 was caused by old equipment that failed. The explosion occurred in an isomerization unit where a raffinate splitter had been overfilled with overheated liquid, and one of the most significant contributing factors was the failure of equipment that had been in service for decades.

On March 23, 2005, the BP refinery in Texas City exploded, killing 15 workers and injuring 180 others. At the time, it was the second-largest oil refinery in Texas and the fourth-largest in the nation. The explosion became the center of national controversy as subsequent investigations revealed failure after failure.

- November 2012: On November 6, 2012, an AmeriGas plant suffered a propane explosion in Montgomery County, just east of Conroe, Texas. At least two employees sustained severe burn injuries.
- February 2013: On February 9, 2013, an Air Liquide cylinder plant in La Porte, Texas, exploded during chemical mixing. One worker was killed and one was injured.
- March 2013: Two separate explosions occurred in March 2013. On March 4, an Akzo Nobel polymer chemical plant in Deer Park, TX, went up in flames after spontaneous combustion, leaving at least one worker with serious injuries. On March 7, the American Steel Foundries plant in Granite City, Illinois, exploded after gas caught fire near a grinding machine, sending 10 people to hospitals.
- April 2013: On April 17, 2013, the West Fertilizer Co. plant in West, TX, exploded, injuring more than 100 people and leaving an undetermined number dead or missing. The explosion destroyed a four-block radius around the plant, demolishing 50 to 75 homes.
- June 2013: On June 13, 2013, the Williams Olefins plant in Geismar, LA, exploded, killing 2 workers and injuring 167 more.
