The Gap Between the Truck and the Car Ahead Is the Margin Between a Close Call and a Fatality

When a truck driver follows the vehicle ahead too closely, the driver has voluntarily eliminated the space needed to stop. If the lead vehicle brakes suddenly, the truck driver’s options collapse to two: rear-end the vehicle ahead, or swerve into another lane and strike whatever is there. Neither outcome is acceptable, and both are foreseeable the moment the gap closes below the safe following distance. The FMCSA’s Large Truck Crash Causation Study reported that 5 percent of truck crashes occurred when the CMV driver was following the lead vehicle too closely.2 In the broader universe of all traffic crashes, rear-end collisions account for approximately 29 percent of all crashes, making them the most common crash configuration on American roads.3 When a truck is the striking vehicle in a rear-end collision, the mass differential makes the consequences for the occupants of the lead vehicle catastrophic.

Following too closely is not an accident. What the FMCSA Recommends

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has established specific following distance guidance for commercial motor vehicle drivers. The recommended formula is one second of following distance for every 10 feet of vehicle length when traveling below 40 mph. For speeds above 40 mph, the driver should add one additional second.2

For a typical tractor-trailer combination measuring approximately 70 to 80 feet in length, the calculation at highway speeds produces a following distance of 8 to 9 seconds. In adverse conditions, including rain, snow, ice, fog, heavy traffic, or poor road surfaces, the FMCSA recommends doubling the calculated following distance.2 A truck that requires 9 seconds of following distance under ideal conditions requires 18 seconds in rain or on wet pavement. Few drivers maintain anything close to these distances in practice, and the gap between the recommended standard and actual behavior is where rear-end crashes occur.

The following distance formula is not arbitrary. It reflects the physical limitations of air brake systems on commercial vehicles. When a truck driver presses the brake pedal, air pressure must build and travel through the system to actuate the brake chambers at each wheel. The Federal Regulatory Framework

Following too closely is also classified as a serious traffic violation under 49 C.F.R. § 383.51 for CDL holders. A second conviction for following too closely, or for any combination of serious traffic violations, within a three-year period results in a 60-day disqualification from operating a commercial motor vehicle. Why Trucks Rear-End Other Vehicles

The mechanics of a truck rear-end crash are straightforward. The truck driver is following too closely. Traffic ahead slows or stops. The driver perceives the deceleration, decides to brake, moves a foot to the brake pedal, presses the pedal, and waits for the air brake system to engage. During this sequence, the truck covers hundreds of feet. If the gap was insufficient to accommodate the perception-reaction distance plus the braking distance, the truck strikes the vehicle ahead at whatever speed remains after braking.

The speed at impact determines the outcome. A truck that was traveling at 65 mph and managed to reduce speed to 40 mph before impact still strikes the lead vehicle at 40 mph. Given the mass of the truck, the impact energy at 40 mph is sufficient to destroy the passenger compartment of most cars. Occupants of the lead vehicle are subjected to forces that overwhelm the structural protection of their vehicle and the restraint capacity of their seat belts and airbags. Rear-end crashes involving trucks are disproportionately fatal for this reason: even a partially successful braking effort may leave enough residual speed for the impact to be unsurvivable.

A carrier that receives this data and takes no corrective action has documented knowledge of the pattern and has chosen to tolerate it.

Telematics and Following Distance Evidence

Modern fleet telematics platforms provide carriers with continuous data on driver-following behavior. Systems from providers such as Samsara, Motive, Omnitracs, and Lytx record hard-brake events with timestamps, GPS coordinates, and speed data. Many systems also record forward collision warning activations, which indicate that the truck’s radar or camera sensors detected a closing gap to the vehicle ahead that exceeded the system’s warning threshold.9

The evidentiary value of telematics data in a following-too-closely crash is substantial. If the carrier’s telematics system recorded 50 hard-brake events for a particular driver in the 90 days before the crash, and many of those events were accompanied by forward collision warnings, the data establishes that the driver was habitually operating with inadequate following distance.
