Dump Truck Driver Dies After Collision with Train in Fort Bend County, Texas

Authorities are investigating a deadly collision involving a train and a dump truck that occurred early in the morning of May 21, 2025, in Fort Bend County, Texas. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred around 6:40 a.m. on FM 2759, near the intersection with Nelson Lane.
According to investigators, the dump truck was traveling along Nelson Lane when it drove onto the railroad tracks and was struck by an oncoming train. Sadly, officials confirmed that the driver of the dump truck died at the scene. No further details about the victim have been released at this time.
“There is a posted railroad crossing sign at that location,” said Brionna Rivers, public information officer for the sheriff’s office. “However, there are no crossing arms, stop signs, or lights installed at the intersection.”
Authorities continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including roadway conditions and visibility at the time of the incident.
While the train did not carry any hazardous materials, the truck involved in the crash did leak fuel, prompting a response from the fire marshal’s office. Officials have not reported any environmental risks stemming from the spill.
The investigation is ongoing.
Texas Has More Freight Train Accidents Than Any Other State
According to decades worth of data, Texas is home to more freight train accidents than any other state in the nation. Part of this is due to the fact that Texas has more freight train tracks than anywhere else, with 12,092 miles. This is more than Illinois and California combined.
But this is just one factor in the state’s disproportionately high number of train accidents. Other issues, like poorly marked railroad crossings and human error, contribute to numerous railroad incidents each year. All too often, these tragedies are preventable. When this is the case, those responsible must be held accountable.
