Explosion at Savita Naturals in Logan Township, New Jersey, Leaves Four Critically Injured

Shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, an explosion tore through the Savita Naturals facility at 617 Heron Drive in the Pureland Industrial Complex in Swedesboro, New Jersey. The blast was powerful enough to be felt across Gloucester County and into the broader tri-state region, with residents as far away as Clayton, Chester, and Harrison reporting that their homes shook. Witnesses said the smoke column was visible from the New Jersey Turnpike and Interstate 295.

Savita Naturals, a family-owned specialty oil extraction company in operation for roughly 35 years, processes cocoa butter for the chocolate industry. County officials confirmed that a significant quantity of propane—stored on-site as part of the production process, including tanks on the facility's roof—was present at the time of the blast.

Four workers inside the building at the time of the explosion were transported to area hospitals, all in critical condition. Two were subsequently transferred to Temple University Hospital's Burn Unit in Philadelphia. According to a family member who spoke with local media, one of the critically injured is the facility's owner. A fifth person working in an adjacent building was also hospitalized after suffering a medical emergency. Company owners confirmed that all personnel at the site are accounted for.

The explosion destroyed much of the Savita Naturals building and caused extensive damage to a neighboring structure. Responding agencies—including crews from both Gloucester and Camden counties, along with hazmat units—remained on scene through the evening to manage continued combustion of stored fuel and to monitor air quality. Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for a two-mile radius around the complex, which was lifted around 5:00 p.m. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and its Bureau of Emergency Response were notified and dispatched to the scene. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill confirmed she had been briefed on the incident, noting that State Police were on the ground alongside county and local responders.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Logan Township Police Chief Joseph Flatley described the event as "a terrible tragedy" and said additional information would be released as the investigation develops. An update from NBC Philadelphia noted that as of Thursday morning, crews were still working to fully extinguish flames at the site.

When Industrial Facilities Store Hazardous Materials, Safety Protocols Must Be Airtight

The cause of this explosion has not been determined, and investigators are still working to understand what happened inside the Savita Naturals facility. But in our experience representing workers injured in plant explosions, incidents like this one raise important questions that families and communities deserve answers to.

Facilities that store and use large quantities of highly flammable gases like propane operate under strict federal and state safety regulations—and for good reason. Proper storage, inspection schedules, pressure monitoring, employee training, and emergency shutoff systems are not optional safeguards; they are the difference between a controlled process and a catastrophic failure. When those systems are inadequate, poorly maintained, or overlooked in the name of productivity, workers bear the consequences.

We don't yet know what led to this explosion. But we know from years of investigating industrial accidents that tragedies like this rarely happen without warning. When they happen, the question of whether every reasonable precaution was taken deserves a thorough and honest answer.

Our hearts go out to everyone injured in this explosion, to the families who received frightening news, and to the Logan Township community shaken by this event. We hope those in critical condition find their way to recovery, and that investigators provide answers soon.
