Louisiana is one of the country’s largest producers of oil and gas. Many of the offshore drilling sites rest just off the coast of southern Louisiana. The state has 19 active refineries, mostly located around Lake Charles and near the Mississippi River.

Accidents at Louisiana Refineries
Below are some notable accidents that have occurred at Louisiana refineries.
- July 1976 – 11 workers killed and dozens injured in an explosion at a Chalmette refinery
- May 1988 – Explosion at Norco refinery kills 7 workers and injures 48 workers and nearby residents
- December 1989 – Baton Rouge refinery explosion kills 1 worker and injures several others
- January 2002 – Worked died of chemical burns in Garyville refinery
- March 2007 – 2 workers injured after a Calumet refinery explodes
- July 2008 – 3 workers suffer severe steam burns in accident at ConocoPhillips refinery
- August 2008 – More than 500,000 of toxins released into the air when ExxonMobil refinery failed to shut down before Hurricane Gustav
- April 2009 – Contract worker fell to his death at the Marathon refinery in Garyville
- October 2010 – Hydrogen sulfide leak kills worker at ExxonMobil refinery in Chalmette
- March 2011 – 1 worker injured and 1 worker killed in hydrogen sulfide accident at Valero’s Norco refinery
- August 2012 – 60 tons of carbon monoxide and 1 ton of benzene released from the Motiva / Shell refinery in Norco
- November 2014 – Accident at ExxonMobil refinery in Baton Rouge causes contract worker to lose leg
- February 2015 – Explosion at Torrance Refinery injures 4 workers
- March 2015 - Contract worker killed at Valero’s St. Charles Refinery in Norco
