Double Decker Bus Crashes into Highway Overpass

A double-decker Megabus leaving Chicago and travelling along Interstate 55 crashed into an overpass pillar about 60 miles north of St. Louis on August 2. Twenty ambulances and two medical helicopters were dispatched to the scene.

Megabus is an inter-city bus company that promotes low customer fares. The company, in operation since 2006, provides services throughout the Northeast, parts of the Southeast and the Midwestern United States. The company also operates in southern Canada.

As is the case with many lower cost operations, Megabus has a somewhat spotty safety record. The most recent accident reportedly occurred when the bus in question sustained a flat tire. The driver lost control of the giant vehicle and smashed into the overpass pillar. In October 2011, a Megabus driver from Chicago was arrested while transporting passengers to Iowa City and Des Moines. Pulled over by a state trooper for failing to stay in his lane, the driver failed a field sobriety test.

In September 2010, a Toronto-bound Megabus missed its exit and slammed into a railway overpass. The front of the bus' upper deck was crushed, resulting in four passenger fatalities and 17 serious injuries. Earlier that year, in February, a Megabus driver struck and killed a Chicago pedestrian after failing to yield the right of way. He was charged with reckless driving.

In December 2009, a Megabus travelling to Toronto slid off the New York State Thruway, sending eight passengers and the driver to the hospital. An investigation into that accident revealed that it was caused by poor weather conditions and an unsafe lane change made by the driver. In September 2008, a Detroit bound Megabus was pulled over by Michigan State police after the bus was noted to be swaying and speeding. The driver had a blood alcohol level of .07, almost double the .0015 level legally permitted for commercial bus operators. The driver was arrested on the spot and a replacement driver was brought in to deliver passengers to their ultimate destination.

As Megabus' troubling safety record proves, discount bus lines often sacrifice safety in order to cut costs. If you or a loved one has been injured while riding on a commercial bus line like Megabus, you may be entitled to compensation.
