American Medical Systems (AMS), which was acquired in 2011 by Endo Health Solutions, has agreed to pay $54.5 million to settle personal injury lawsuits filed over its dangerously defective pelvic mesh products.
The lawsuits have been filed since 2008 in both federal and state courts around the country. They accuse AMS of causing injuries because its transvaginal surgical mesh products, designed to treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence, were defective. Vaginal mesh implants have been shown to cause mesh shortening, which can lead to vaginal shortening, tightening and severe pain; mesh erosion, which can lead to blood in the urine, recurrent urinary tract infections, or fistula; bowel perforation; bladder perforation; and hemorrhaging.
The settlement covers current and future lawsuits. As part of the deal, AMS must put the $54.5 million into an escrow account by July 15; the funds will be paid out to victims who agree to dismiss any further legal proceedings against the company.
If you have suffered an injury as a result of an AMS vaginal mesh implant, or an implant made by any other device manufacturer, you should understand all your legal options before accepting a settlement that forces you to abandon your right to sue.
