Understanding the Risperdal Drug
The anti-psychotic drug known as Risperdal or risperdone, has been on the FDA-approved market since 1994, and over the years has produced countless side effects that patients would have never have thought to occur. Though used to treat conditions such as bipolar disorders and the like, this prescription has resulted in a tragic number of cases of gynecomastia and galactorrhea in male patients. It was discovered that this particular drug has created unnatural levels of prolactin levels in the male body, causing them to form both breast tissues and milk supply. $2.2 Billion Settlement for Criminal & Civil Investigations
After years of criminal and civil investigations looking into this drug, Johnson & Johnson has finally agreed to pay over $2.2 billion in order to resolve the claims and charges that are against them in the U.S. These charges specifically involved the acts of wrongful marketing of their prescription drug to the public. Reports state that the U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in Washington, will announce this settlement today.
The J&J Janssen unit will plead guilty before the court today for a misdemeanor criminal charge for the illegal marketing of their Risperdal drug, though this court hearing will not be the end-all for J&J lawsuits. There are still a large number of victims who are seeking Risperdal claims because of the side effects of the drugs on the patients and their loved ones. It was disclosed in August 2011 that J&J intended to agree to the misdemeanor settlement for the Risperdal marketing, particularly due to the fact that they were promoting the drug to those whose use was not approved by the FDA at the time. The United States government has been probing into this company since 2004 for their sales practices of Risperdal and this settlement is just part of the many claims that J&J will continue to be facing for years to come.
