An elderly widow from Boca Raton, Florida won a $3.8 million settlement last Friday night from a Palm Beach County jury after suing two tobacco companies for the death of her beloved husband. The widow claims that her husband was addicted to cigarettes manufactured by the tobacco companies, and the constant smoking eventually caused him to develop lung cancer. Reports show that the individual developed the deadly illness in the year 1995 when he was only 59 years old. His widow specifically targeted Lorillard Tobacco Co. and R.J. Reynolds for the offense.
In the state of Florida, those who have lost their loved ones to lung cancer have the ability to sue a cigarette company or tobacco manufacturer that may be responsible for the illness. Also, those that are diagnosed with an illness have the ability to seek compensation even if they recover from the lung cancer.
As this story evidences, some of these plaintiffs can earn large amounts of money by filing a lawsuit. The Florida courts shut down large civil suits that were being formed against tobacco companies in the state, but instead said that they will hear each and every tobacco lawsuit individually and decide on the appropriate settlement as a result of the individual's case. Tobacco companies have tried to appeal the Supreme Court of Florida's ruling on this subject, but to no avail.
