Bus Crash in Mexico Kills at Least 12 Cruise Passengers

On Tuesday, a bus flipped when driving toward Mayan ruins in Mexico from the port at Mahahual. The bus was carrying passengers from two Royal Caribbean cruise ships: the Celebrity Equinox and Serenade of the Seas.

The accident occurred at 9 a.m. on a two-lane road while the bus drove to ruins in Chacchoben, approximately 110 miles south of Tulum. The cause of the accident is currently unclear. One of the passengers aboard the bus said that the sky was clear, the road was dry, and there weren't any signs of another vehicle involved.

12 Killed in Tragic Bus Accident

It has been reported that at least 12 passengers were killed in the incident, including a South Florida grandmother and her 11-year-old grandson. Currently, family members are unsure whether their loved ones are safe. “We don’t have really concrete information,” said the woman’s 18-year-old grandson. “We’re all scared. It’s just really scary to process this in my head that possibly something really bad happened to them.”

The Quintana Roo state Civil Defense spokesman said that 7 Americans and 2 Swedes were among those injured in the accident, but it is unclear the nationalities of the individuals who were killed. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico has stated that they are working with local authorities to determine if Americans were involved.
