On Monday evening around 6:45 p.m., a 17 car pileup occurred on Interstate 20, just 2 miles from the Midland County line. Per initial reports from the City of Midland, a thunderstorm in the area had caused a dust storm, which had moved across the interstate, affecting the visibility of the drivers.
To deal with the decreased visibility, drivers reduced their speed, which eventually caused the chain reaction that led to the pileup. Both cars on the east and westbound lanes were involved in the accidents. Of the 17 vehicles that were involved, 5 of them were tractor trailers.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and extricated two people from their cars.
Two other people who were severely injured in the crash were taken to hospitals in critical condition.
According to reports, fuel was the only thing spilled on the highway.
