On early Saturday morning, a valve malfunctioned at a plant in Pasadena, TX, setting off a subsequent explosion and fire that left nearly two dozen people in need of medical attention. According to Kuraray America, the Pasadena plant explosion occurred at their EVAL™ facility located at Bay Area Boulevard and Choate Road just before 11 a.m.
The La Porte Police Department confirmed that 22 people were injured by the blast.
Of those, two people sustained serious burns and were airlifted to a hospital. The other hurt workers suffered minor burns and topical injuries described as non-life threatening; some of these injuries were obtained while fleeing the scene.
There were approximately 250 individuals onsite at the time of the incident, per a statement posted by the company just after noon. All individuals, which consisted of both employees and contract personnel, have since been accounted for.
The company reported that six were being treated at off-site medical facility.
Currently, there is no shelter in place, and the Pasadena Fire Marshal’s Office reported the fire as no longer active.
