On Friday, state fire officials confirmed that four of the wildfires that roared through Northern California last fall—burning 14 square miles and destroying 130+ buildings—were caused by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) power lines that came into contact with trees. Per the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, three of them could have been prevented had PG&E made more of an effort to stay clear of the trees.
CalFire has since turned these findings over to local prosecutors of counties where the fires occurred.
PG&E has reported that it will be reviewing the findings to add safety precautions to its procedures. “Based on the information we have so far, we believe our overall programs met our state’s high standards,” said PG&E in a statement. They then stated that they inspect and monitor every line at least once per year.
These four fires were part of more than 170 that blazed across California in October 2017, contained mostly to Nevada and Butte counties, as well as large parts of California wine country.
In total, these fires destroyed more than 380 square miles.
