A multi-vehicle pileup was captured on camera in Lubbock County, Texas on Friday. The incident occurred at the scene of a two-car accident on the eastbound portion of Highway 84. As responders were investigating the crash, a semi-truck lost control, slid through the scene of the accident, and sent people running for their lives. The area was under an advisory for dense fog at the time.
The 18-wheeler pinned a person inside a pickup truck and hit a state trooper as it crashed. Both individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and are expected to survive their injuries. However, the severity of their injuries has not been revealed.
What Happened During the Highway 84 Accident
Caleb Holder, a photographer for KCBD, was recording a video the moment the truck lost control. The footage shows a red SUV pulling a camping trailer switch lanes as officials investigate the scene of the first accident. Then, the semi-truck can be seen approaching at a high rate of speed as it emerges from the foggy horizon. It then turns off the road to miss the SUV and jackknifes as nearby people run toward safety. Several more vehicles collided with the back of the semi-trailer.
"We could hear more tires screeching, and then just barely see headlights coming in through the fog," Holder told KCBD. "I've never seen anything like that in person," he continued.
In total, there were five crashes. Four tractor-trailers and four smaller vehicles were involved with collisions. Fog in the area is causing a quarter mile or less of visibility and is expected to lift later in the afternoon. While Highway 84 has been cleared and reopened, officials are asking drivers in the area to slow down to prevent more accidents from occurring.
