Truck Crashes into Nothing Bundt Cakes in Atascocita, Killing Employee & Injuring Customer

A young woman working at a Nothing Bundt Cakes bakery in Atascocita was killed and a customer was injured Tuesday afternoon when a pickup truck drove through the front of the store. The crash happened just after 3:10 p.m. on West Lake Houston Parkway, northeast of downtown Houston.

Harris County Sheriff's Office Major Anthony McConnell told reporters at the scene that the employee, whose identity has not yet been publicly released, was killed on impact. A 52-year-old customer who had come in to order cakes for her workplace was struck by debris and by the truck itself, KPRC 2 reported. The customer was transported to a hospital in stable condition and required stitches for cuts, according to her daughter, who spoke with reporters at the scene. Three other people were evaluated at the scene for injuries.

What Investigators Have Said So Far

According to statements from the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the driver, a man in his late 70s, was attempting to park in front of the bakery when he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. The pickup then drove through the front of the store. His wife was inside the vehicle as a passenger. Deputies said the driver showed no signs of intoxication and was fully cooperative with law enforcement. He was detained at the scene.

An employee who was in the store at the time of the crash told ABC13 Houston that she and her coworkers ran out the back of the store after hearing the impact. "We thought the building was falling," she said.

A Widespread Safety Concern

Research from the Storefront Safety Council sheds light on how often incidents like this happen. The organization estimates that more than 100 vehicle-into-building crashes occur every day in the United States, resulting in as many as 16,000 injuries and roughly 2,600 deaths every year. Retail storefronts, restaurants, and convenience stores are struck most often, especially those with parking spaces facing the building.

Pedal-error crashes, in which a driver mistakenly presses the gas pedal instead of the brake, account for a significant share of these incidents. Drivers over 60 are disproportionately represented in that category, though drivers of every age group are involved.

Safety experts have long identified crash-rated bollards, which are reinforced posts installed in front of storefronts and public buildings, as one of the most effective ways to prevent vehicles from entering commercial spaces. Despite their availability, however, few states or municipalities require them.

Catastrophic motor vehicle accidents are rarely as random as they first appear, and accountability often extends beyond the person behind the wheel. Our thoughts are with the family of the employee who was killed, the customer who was injured, and everyone in the Atascocita community affected by this tragedy.
