Staten Island Shipyard Explosion & Fire Kills 1, Injures Dozens
A worker was killed and dozens of firefighters and emergency responders were injured after a fire and two explosions at a Staten Island shipyard on Friday, May 22, 2026. A second worker at the site was also injured.
The incident occurred at the Richmond Industrial Complex in Mariners Harbor, near Richmond Terrace between Lockman and Andros Avenues. Officials said the fire began in a metal structure near the rear of the shipyard, close to the docks, before conditions rapidly worsened.
How the Incident Unfolded
The fire was first reported around 3:30 p.m. Friday in the basement of a metal structure at the shipyard. Two workers were initially reported trapped inside. When FDNY crews arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and limited visibility as they began search and rescue operations.
Roughly 50 minutes later, at about 4:20 p.m., a major explosion occurred while firefighters were still inside the structure. A second blast followed shortly afterward, injuring additional responders. More than 200 first responders were ultimately called to the scene, and the fire was brought under control around 7:20 p.m.
One civilian worker was found dead at the scene. Another worker was rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment. Officials said the cause of the fire and explosions remains under investigation.
Serious Injuries Among First Responders
Dozens of FDNY members and emergency responders were injured during the response. Two sustained the most serious injuries.
A fire marshal assigned to a special search and rescue team suffered a skull fracture and a brain bleed; they were later listed in critical but stable condition. A firefighter was also seriously injured and remained under medical care.
FDNY officials have since said injured members were being evaluated for blast-related internal injuries. These injuries can occur when pressure waves from an explosion move through a confined space, potentially damaging organs even when there are few visible external wounds.
Why Shipyard Work Can Be So Dangerous
Shipyards and dry dock facilities can present several serious hazards at once. Workers may be performing welding, cutting, or other hot work near fuel residue, solvents, flammable materials, or enclosed areas where gases can collect. Confined spaces such as tanks, voids, basements, and compartments can also create risks involving toxic fumes, limited oxygen, poor visibility, and difficult rescue conditions.
These environments often include heavy machinery, lifting equipment, overhead loads, electrical systems, chemicals, and waterfront hazards. When a fire or explosion occurs in that kind of setting, the danger can spread quickly, not only for workers on site, but also for the firefighters and emergency personnel responding to help.
Incidents like this leave a lasting impact on families, coworkers, and the responders who put themselves in harm’s way. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.
