Explosion & Fire at INEOS Chemical Plant in Pasadena, TX

Around 12:15 pm local time on Wednesday, March 22, an explosion rocked the INEOS chemical plant in Pasadena, TX. The blast was visible from the nearby freeway and a fire broke out as a result.

HAZMAT crews and emergency responders raced to the scene in response to the explosion and fire. The cause is not yet clear, but sources report that it may have been a pipeline explosion.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted about the incident on Wednesday afternoon, announcing that one person had been transported to a local hospital.

Although no shelter in place has been ordered at this time, Beltway 8 at Texas 225 is shut down until further notice. The Houston Ship Channel Bridge, too, is closed.

INEOS Group is a global petrochemical manufacturer with operations in 29 countries throughout the world. It is currently unclear which chemical may be burning at their Pasadena plant.
