Chemical Plant Explosion Survivor Shares His Story

In May 2018, Chiedu Obi was working at a chemical plant in Pasadena, Texas, when an explosion ripped through the facility. A reactor had over-pressurized after the plant started up a unit without properly notifying the workers on site. The blast injured more than 20 workers.

Chiedu was one of them. At 34 years old, he found himself facing an uncertain future.

“A War Zone”

The explosion hit suddenly. Chiedu felt the ground shake beneath him, followed by a deafening noise. Then the blast.

"All of a sudden, it felt like a train just started coming. We felt the ground shake, and I heard this loud noise. As soon as we turned around, and it just—poof. From then on, it was just chaos."

What Chiedu experienced that day stayed with him. A coworker was being carried away in a wheelbarrow. Others stood with their shirts off, their skin burned red. He didn’t know if some of them were alive.

"Never been in a situation where I had seen that much devastation. It was literally like a war zone."

Putting Money Over Workers’ Lives

For Chiedu, the cause of the explosion made the experience even harder to process. The plant had started up a unit without making sure everyone on site knew what was happening. The resulting over-pressurization in a reactor led directly to the blast.

“I believe the plant failed us because they say every accident is preventable. That was preventable what happened to us. They put money over our lives."

Investigators later determined that the explosion was caused by abnormally high-pressure conditions in the reactor during startup. These findings echoed what Chiedu and other workers already knew: the people running the plant had not taken the steps needed to keep them safe.

Finding the Right Firm

Chiedu had never experienced anything like this. He didn’t know where to turn, so he did what many people in his position do. He searched online.

"I've never been through this, so through the Internet, I just looked up personal injury lawyers. I saw their reviews were remarkable. That's how I decided to go with Arnold & Itkin in the end to represent me."

From the beginning, Chiedu says the firm made him feel supported during one of the most difficult times of his life.

"Everyone was there for me. They made me feel comfortable through this rough patch in my life."

That kind of care mattered. For someone dealing with the physical and emotional toll of a plant explosion, knowing that his legal team was genuinely looking out for him made the process less isolating.

Beyond All Expectations

Chiedu says that Arnold & Itkin didn’t just meet the bar. They cleared it.

“They exceeded my expectations of what to even expect.”

Today, Chiedu looks ahead with confidence. The uncertainty that followed the explosion has been replaced by stability for him and his family.

"I feel that my future is a lot more secure. I'll be able to make sure my kids are okay. I'll be able to make sure my fiancé and I are okay. Our future is locked now for the better, for the good."

His message to anyone facing a similar situation is clear and direct:

"I would definitely recommend Arnold & Itkin to anyone that's looking for a personal injury attorney. Go with Arnold & Itkin because they're there for you. They have your back. They will go above and beyond. You just might be surprised in the end of what they're capable of."

Chiedu’s story is a reminder of what workers and their families are left to deal with when companies fail to follow the safety standards meant to protect them. The explosion that changed his life was preventable. Having a team willing to stand with him through the aftermath gave Chiedu something that the plant never did: the chance to face the future with confidence.

We’re proud to have stood with Chiedu and his family.
