About Sugar Land

Sugar Land is located just about 20 minutes from downtown Houston, Texas. It encompasses a total area of 34 square miles and is the most populous city in Fort Bend County; as of July 2021, the population of Sugar Land was 109,373. Two major waterways run through Sugar Land: Brazos River and Oyster Creek.

In its early days, Sugar Land found most of its growth and prosperity in the sugar cane industry. The fertile land proved the perfect spot for farming, and a sugar cane refinery was built in 1896. In 1906, the Imperial Sugar Company purchased that refinery, modernized it, and developed the town by building a hospital and housing for workers and their families. Although sugar cane growth ended in 1928, the industry had already provided Sugar Land with the foothold it needed to thrive. Sugar Land was incorporated as a city in 1959. The Imperial Sugar logo remains in the city’s seal and logo.

Today, Sugar Land is known as a fast-growing and affluent community. It is a largely suburban area with master-planned communities, shopping centers, parks, and recreational facilities. The Sugar Land economy is strong and stable, with the Imperial Sugar headquarters still located within the city limits. The oil services company Schlumberger has a major campus in Sugar Land, as does Fluor Daniel. Minute Maid also has headquarters in the city. The largest employers in Sugar Land are Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, Fluor Enterprises, Schlumberger, Nalco Champion, and Memorial Hermann Sugar Land.

Some of Sugar Land’s top attractions are Constellation Field, the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land, Sugar Land Memorial Park, Sugar Land Town Square, and Cullinan Park. The city offers no shortage of indoor and outdoor activities for children and adults, as well as history, culture, shopping, and restaurants to enjoy.
