DCP Midstream Fined $79,000 After Fatal Pipeline Fire in Weld County, Colorado

In November 2017, three men were severely injured in an incident involving a DCP Midstream pipeline fire at a PDC Energy well site in Weld County, Colorado. The three workers, one a DCP Midstream employee and two Complete Energy contractors, had been called to the scene to clear a gas buildup in a pipeline when a fire broke out. Witnesses reported seeing a ball of flames and then a plume of smoke. All three workers suffered serious burns when the gas pipeline caught fire. Two were airlifted and one was taken by ambulance to receive emergency medical treatment.

Two of the workers died from their injuries. OSHA investigated, levying a $79,004 fine against DCP Midstream and Complete Energy for workplace safety failures.

OSHA reported the following violations in its investigation report:

  • Failure to control potential ignition sources in a work area
  • Failure to isolate hazardous energy sources using lockout procedures
  • Failure to train workers on detecting flammable hydrocarbons in the work area

New Mexico Environment Department Fines DCP Midstream $5.3 Million

In July 2020, the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) fined DCP Operating Company LP, a subsidiary of DCP Midstream, $5.3 million for repeated violations of state air pollution standards. The alleged violations date back to 2017 and relate to 8 facilities in the Permian Basin, specifically in Eddy County and Lea County. In addition to the civil penalty, NMED demanded that DCP immediately comply with state and federal regulations related to air quality and pollution.

According to NMED, DCP’s 8 facilities named in the report released over 2.1 million pounds of excess emissions.

DCP Midstream Pipeline Fire Injures 2 Workers in Sutton County, Texas

In November 2018, two workers were seriously injured when a DCP Midstream pipeline ruptured and caught fire. The workers were digging for a new pipeline when they struck an existing pipeline. The accident happened along County Road 406 in Sutton County, Texas.

Gas Explosion Rocks Piedmont, Oklahoma

In September 2020, a massive explosion left a 40-foot crater in Piedmont, Oklahoma. The explosion was the result of a 12-inch natural gas pipeline owned by DCP Midstream. The high-pressure pipeline had weakened over time, eventually resulting in the explosion, which rocked the entire community. Thankfully, no one was injured in the blast and resulting fire, but nearby property and power lines were damaged.
